Es ist ein Porträt von André Herzberg, dem Sänger der Band „Pankow“, dessen Persönlichkeit sehr vielschichtig ist. Einerseits der bodenständige, kein Blatt vor den Mund nehmende, rebellische Berliner mit dem typisch deftigen Humor, andererseits der feinsinnige, verkopfte, zweifelnde Künstler. Diese Antipoden habe ich versucht zu allegorisieren. Ich steckte ihn in einen Schlosseranzug mit passenden Schuhen und einer Eisenkugel am Bein, um seine bodenständige Seite zu symbolisieren. Die andere Seite seines Wesens versuchte ich mit den auf den Rücken geschnallten Engelsflügeln zu zeigen. (Da fällt mir gerade ein Zitat vom verehrten Karl Lagerfeld ein: „I´m very much down to earth. Just not on this earth.“) Die Schreibmaschine jedenfalls ist ein Hinweis darauf, dass er damals anfing, ein Buch zu schreiben. Als er sich gerade eine Gauloises ansteckte, drückte ich ab. Diese analoge Photographie entstand 2000 für sein gemeinsames Projekt „Die drei Highligen“ mit Dirk Michaelis und Dirk Zöllner in einer Fabrikhalle. ___ The word "Ahasver" refers to the eternal seeker, the restless biblical wanderer. It is a portrait of André Herzberg, lead singer of the band "Pankow", and his multi-faceted personality. He is a grounded, straight-talking Berliner with a down-to-earth sense of humor, and also a sensitive, sophisticated, and self-doubting artist. I have attempted to allegorize these contrasts. I styled André in a locksmith’s suit and matching shoes, with a ball and chain shackled to his leg to symbolize his down-to-earth side. I attempted to illustrate the other side of his nature by strapping angel wings to his back. (This reminds me of a quote by the much-revered Karl Lagerfeld: "I’m very much down to earth. Just not on this earth."). The typewriter references his starting to write a book around that time. I pressed the shutter button at the moment he lit up his Gauloises cigarette. Eine Zeit lang lag neben meinem Bett immer ein Heft, in dem ich besonders skurrile Traumbilder notierte. So auch dieses. Mitte der Neunzigerjahre gab es in Ostdeutschland noch genug leerstehende Fabrikhallen und Häuser, in denen man wunderbar inszenieren konnte. Das Photo entstand an einem Neujahrstag. Mit noch schwerem Kopf bereiteten ein Freund und ich die Tür vor, schlugen ein Loch hinein. Mein „Arm-Model“ stand in einem Raum, ich mit meiner Camera im Nebenzimmer. Es war ein grauer, trüber, melancholisch eingefärbter Tag. In dem Abrisshaus war es totenstill. Den Moment, in dem mein Kollege seinen Arm durch das Loch schob, werde ich nicht vergessen. Ein schaurig-schönes Bild. Unheimlich. In einer traumähnlich-surrealen Atmosphäre. ___ I had seen this picture in a dream. For a while, I kept a notebook beside my bed, in which I wrote down particularly bizarre dream images. As was the case here. In the mid-nineties, there were still lots of empty factories and houses around East Germany – wonderful places for staging photo shoots. This photo was taken on New Year's Day. We were still hung-over when a friend and I prepared the door, punching a hole through it. As my "arm model" stood in one room, I stood with my camera in the next. It was a grey, dull, melancholy day. It was dead quiet in the derelict house. I will never forget the moment when my friend pushed his arm through the hole. A scary yet beautiful image. Eerie. A dreamlike-surreal atmosphere.
